OpenIDEA: Rust IDE Download and IntelliJ Comparison

Find the OpenIDEA project and compare its documented workflow with IntelliJ IDEA.

GUIDE · SOURCES REVIEWED

OpenIDEA is an independent IDE project with a Rust core and an IntelliJ-style workflow. The repository describes editing, code insight, debugging, Git and terminal features and links to downloads for macOS, Windows and Linux. It is not JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA.

Before switching editors

Start with the repository’s download and release instructions. Open a copy of a small project and check the language support, debugger, extensions, keymap and project integrations you actually depend on. A familiar layout does not imply identical plugin or feature compatibility.

The maintainers publish a comparison on one Python project with warm caches. This is a project-reported benchmark for that setup, not a guarantee of speed or memory usage on your machine. Compare both editors with the same project, environment, caches and enabled integrations before making a decision.

The repository identifies an Apache-2.0 licence; inspect the current licence and dependencies for your use. Source checked November 4, 2026. Varwo has not installed either editor for this comparison or reproduced the benchmark.

OpenIDEA versus IntelliJ IDEA

OpenIDEA is a separate project that aims for a familiar workflow; the repository says it is not affiliated with JetBrains. Similar keyboard shortcuts or panels do not establish compatibility with IntelliJ plugins, project models or every language feature. Before migrating, check your required language server, debugger, build integration and plugins on a copy of a representative project.

The maintainers' benchmark describes a Windows machine and a warm-cache Python project. They note the editors do not do identical analysis before being counted as ready. Treat those numbers as one reported scenario, not a universal speed ranking.
