Free YouTube Video Download Applications: Options and Limits
A free download application and a website promising instant downloads are different routes. For a documented open-source application, start with the actual yt-dlp project and its installation guidance.

Choose an application type
| Route | Useful when | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| yt-dlp, a command-line application | You want documented controls and can follow platform-specific installation instructions | The correct release, dependencies and current site support |
| A browser downloader | You want to inspect a single public-link service | Its current operation, output quality and handling of the link |
| A platform's own offline option | You want viewing within that platform | Account, region and whether an exportable file is provided |
The yt-dlp repository describes an audio/video downloader with release and usage documentation. Use its own installation section for your operating system; a similarly named sponsored download is not necessarily the same software.
Check the result you actually need
Write down whether you need video, audio, subtitles or a specific container. Container, codec and resolution are separate properties. A label saying MP4 or HD does not establish playback compatibility, and separately delivered audio and video can require processing before use.
Before committing to a workflow, test a video you own or are permitted to save and inspect the resulting duration, audio, subtitles and dimensions. This is an untested acceptance plan, not a report that a particular YouTube format currently downloads successfully.
Free application access does not imply that every video is available or that access restrictions may be bypassed. A private, removed or otherwise unavailable video is not made downloadable by a generic promise on a website. Varwo provides source navigation here rather than a paste-and-download service.
