Open HackerTube · Karpathy’s announcement

HackerTube is a website for discovering YouTube videos recommended on Hacker News. If you want the project introduced by Andrej Karpathy, start at hackertube.org. Similar names in search results are not enough to establish that another site belongs to the same project.

Sources checked November 3, 2026. We reviewed the announcement and public navigation; we did not test playback, recommendations or saved-history persistence.

What makes the collection different?

Karpathy’s October 31 post describes a collection of 6,454 videos across 150 topics, selected from Hacker News recommendations spanning 2007–2026. Those are the launch figures, not a live count checked by Varwo. The post says thumbnails use a frame from the middle of each video and preference state stays in the local browser session without a user account.

The selection reflects that community’s recommendations. It is not a complete YouTube catalog, a fact-check of every video, or evidence that every viewer will prefer it. Karpathy also links a data export for people interested in building their own version; access to a dataset does not by itself settle rights to reuse the underlying videos.

Pick a starting route

The live site exposes search and these navigation choices:

Your taskStarting point
Explore a subjectCategories, then choose a topic
Follow a sequencePlaylists
Find longer viewingLongs
Return to somethingLiked, History or Watch later in the browser you used

For a useful first visit, choose one topic you already know and one unfamiliar topic. Compare the selection with what you normally watch. Open the original video context before relying on a technical claim, especially when its date matters. If a video cannot play, distinguish a missing or restricted original from a problem loading the collection.

Do not assume saved items synchronize to another browser or device: the announcement describes local session state. Review the site’s settings before clearing browser storage if those selections matter to you.

Is this an AI video generator?

The announcement describes AI helping build and curate the website. It does not describe a tool that generates a new video from your prompt. For that different task, see our video creation guides. HackerTube’s immediate value is finding something to watch on the original service.
