Lovable and PHP: Connect an API or Change the Stack?

Separate Lovable’s generated application stack from an external PHP backend, and plan the API contract and credential path before integrating.

GUIDE · SOURCES REVIEWED

A Lovable app can use an external PHP API; that does not mean Lovable generates or hosts a PHP application. Lovable's FAQ says new apps use TanStack Start, while older apps use React and Vite, and it does not offer an arbitrary framework choice. Its API integration guide describes connecting external services. The PHP route below is an application of that documented API capability, not a PHP-specific integration we have tested.

Prepare the contract first

For one harmless operation, define the URL, HTTP method, authentication, example response, error response and fields the interface should display. Make clear which user is allowed to read or change the data. Supply API documentation or an OpenAPI description rather than asking the builder to guess your database structure.

Lovable's documentation distinguishes managed connectors from direct integrations and says the service must be reachable by the integration. It describes storing protected credentials outside visitor-visible code. If a call is made directly from the browser, your backend must also permit the intended origin; do not solve authentication by embedding a private server key in frontend code.

Verify one complete user action

On a test backend, check a successful response, an unauthorized request and an expected validation error. Inspect both the interface and server result. For a write operation, confirm the resulting state before retrying an uncertain request.

An integration that only displays a successful response has not established authorization isolation or safe write behavior. Keep the first trial narrow enough that you can inspect those outcomes.
