One official source route, platform-specific downloads and a small DOCX round-trip check help evaluate this early-stage editor.
Local document editing and agent-assisted document automation
Alpha software with documented file-fidelity gaps. CLI/MCP enables agent control, not a bundled AI writing subscription. Sources reviewed October 23, 2026; no installation or file-conversion test run by Varwo.
To download WordCraft, start with the ArtCraft product page and its linked Storytold repository. “ArtCraft Word” refers to this document editor in the Craft Apps family; it is separate from the ArtCraft AI image/video studio.

What WordCraft does
WordCraft is a Rust word processor with a familiar document-editing interface. The project README describes DOCX input/output, document formatting, review tools and export. Its software is offered under MIT OR Apache-2.0.
Its relevance to AI workflows is agent control: the project exposes document operations through a command-line tool and MCP. That is different from an AI writing model included in the editor. Choose and pay for any connected agent separately.
Choose a download route
The product page offers an ArtCraft Launcher route and standalone WordCraft downloads. The launcher manages several Craft Apps; standalone is the route when you only want this editor. Follow the linked upstream installer rather than a similarly named repository or a repackaged mirror.
| Platform | What to look for in upstream downloads |
|---|---|
| macOS | Universal DMG for the app; the separate universal CLI archive serves automation |
| Windows | Match x64, ARM64 or x86 to your computer; installer and portable packages are separate choices |
| Linux | Match CPU architecture and package format to your distribution; available formats are listed in the release |
| BSD | Check the particular release's supported targets rather than assuming every build is available |
On October 23, GitHub's latest release was v0.10.0, while some standalone links on the product page still named v0.8.0. Check the resolved tag and filename before downloading. The v0.10.0 notes also exclude FreeBSD ARM64 from that release; that does not describe all BSD targets or future versions.
The README documents a SHA256SUMS.txt file with release checksums. Match the exact filename to its release entry. Comparing a file to that entry checks consistency with the published artifact; it is not an independent security audit.
Test one copy before moving a document workflow
The roadmap still describes alpha readiness and outstanding DOCX fidelity, stability and printing work. The known gaps are more useful than assuming that a familiar ribbon means full Word compatibility.
Make a disposable document with a heading, a numbered list, a small table, a comment and a page break. Then:
- Save the original outside your trial-output folder.
- Open a copy in WordCraft and change one paragraph.
- Save to a new filename, close it, and reopen it in the application where the document will ultimately be used.
- Compare text, page layout, table widths, review marks and any embedded objects.
- Record the WordCraft release and each mismatch. Keep the original until you have checked the saved copy.
For a real workflow, include its actual troublesome features in the sample. Passing a plain-text letter says little about a complex report with diagrams or field codes.
Automate documents with CLI and MCP
The MCP documentation describes a headless server and a separate connection to a running desktop app. For a first headless experiment, install the CLI from upstream and make sure it is available in the environment that starts your agent.
The documented Claude Code registration is:
claude mcp add wordcraft -- wordcraft-cli mcpRegistration changes your client configuration; this page has not executed it. If you need to limit document access, the same documentation provides --automation-read-root and --automation-write-root flags for the headless server. Both folders must exist. That mode is distinct from connecting to an unrestricted running desktop app.
Use a first task with an observable result:
Create a one-page sample document from this supplied paragraph.
Use one heading and a two-column table. Save a new DOCX in the output folder.
Read the saved document back and report its heading and table contents.
Keep the original unchanged. List anything you could not verify.Inspect both structure and rendered appearance. A successful tool call alone does not establish that the document will paginate or round-trip correctly elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
Is WordCraft free?
The software is free and open source. External AI agents and model services have their own access and charges; WordCraft's license does not provide them.
Is WordCraft the ArtCraft image-generation app?
No. It belongs to the same wider product family but edits documents. Use the ArtCraft overview for image/video creation.
Can it replace Word for my existing files?
Evaluate your own representative copies against the documented gaps. We have not established file compatibility or production readiness through testing.
